Urn Size for Human Ashes
When it comes to determining the correct size of urn you need for ashes the best rule of thumb is 1 cubic inch for every 1lb the deceased weighed.
A few exceptions to this rule:
- If the deceased was particularly tall, you may want to plan for additional capacity
- For stillborn or young babies you may need slightly more capacity
Important Note: Height is a contributing factor towards the size urn you will need. The taller a person is the longer their bones will inherently be which results in more ash. Fat burns away during the cremation process, and thus has less of an impact on the final volume of ashes. This should be taken into account when calculating the urn you will need.
An urn that contains 3.5L (213 cu in) is considered standard and will accommodate a majority of cases.
